Product details

The Hayward CSPAXI11 is an 11 kW electric spa heater for 240V single phase service, putting out about 37,500 BTU/hr. The cabinet is compact, about 11-5/8 in. tall, 6-1/4 in. wide and 6-5/8 in. deep, so it can go in tight spaces such as under a spa skirt or steps. It can be installed indoors or outdoors with at least 6 in. of clearance to combustible construction.

Construction and controls

The tank and threaded head are 304 stainless steel. Temperature is set with an adjustable thermostat that has a positive off position at its lowest setting, a pilot lamp cycles on and off with the element, and a surface mount high limit thermostat is wired into the circuit. A factory installed pressure switch, set at 3 psi, shuts the heater off if the pump stops or a dirty filter restricts flow.

Sizing

Hayward's chart for a covered, insulated spa: a 30 degree F rise takes about 80 minutes for 200 gallons, 120 minutes for 300 gallons, 200 minutes for 500 gallons and 400 minutes for 1,000 gallons. To estimate volume, multiply surface area by average depth by 7.5. Keeping the spa covered when it is not in use holds in heat and cuts evaporation.

Installation

Plumb the heater into the return line from the filter to the spa using pipe of at least 1-1/2 in. inside diameter, and never install a shutoff valve between the heater outlet and the spa. Hayward calls for a 60 A breaker, No. 6 copper supply wire for runs up to 50 ft and a No. 10 copper ground, and recommends GFCI protection, so have a qualified electrician do the wiring to code. The warranty does not cover use with salt, sea, mineral or other non-potable water.

Water care

Hayward recommends keeping pH at 7.2 to 7.8, total alkalinity at 80 to 120 ppm, calcium hardness at 175 to 350 ppm depending on the spa finish, and chlorine at 1.0 to 5.0 ppm. Water that runs too acidic or too scaling can destroy heater components.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

How long will it take to heat my spa?
Hayward's chart for a covered, insulated spa gives a 30 degree F rise in about 80 minutes for 200 gallons, 120 minutes for 300 gallons, 200 minutes for 500 gallons and 400 minutes for 1,000 gallons, and half the rise takes about half the time. For volume, multiply surface area in square feet by average depth in feet, then by 7.5.
What electrical supply does it need?
240V single phase at 46 A. Hayward calls for a 60 A breaker, No. 6 copper supply wire for runs up to 50 ft, going one gauge larger for each additional 50 ft, and a No. 10 copper ground, with GFCI protection recommended. A qualified electrician should wire it to the National Electrical Code and local codes, with a disconnect switch supplied by the installer.
Where does it go in the plumbing?
In the return line from the filter to the spa, on piping at least 1-1/2 in. inside diameter. Never put a shutoff valve or other restriction between the heater outlet and the spa. If the heater sits below the spa water level, Hayward calls for a wing check valve with no shutoff feature on that line instead.
Can I use it on a salt water spa?
Hayward designs it for spa water from a municipal supply, and its warranty does not cover use with salt, sea, mineral or other non-potable water.
