The Hayward SX200C is the internal elbow for the S-200 and S-240 side mount sand filters. It also turns up in parts lists as the top diffuser elbow, which is the same piece.
What it does
The elbow sits inside the top of the tank and turns the incoming flow so water is spread across the sand bed rather than driven straight down into it. A cracked or broken elbow lets water channel, which is what people notice as poor filtration long before they find the broken part.
Getting to it
This is an internal component, so the filter has to be opened up. Because of that it is worth inspecting during a sand change and replacing it then rather than opening the tank twice.
