The Hayward SX144DA is the lateral assembly with center pipe for S144T sand filters. It is the genuine Hayward part, supplied as the complete underdrain rather than as individual laterals.
What the laterals do
At the bottom of a sand filter sits a set of slotted arms feeding a central standpipe. Water works its way down through the media, passes through slots too fine for sand to follow, and leaves through the center pipe. When one of those arms cracks, the slot barrier is gone and sand goes out to the pool through the returns, usually appearing as a fine layer on the floor within a day or two of the filter running.
Replacing them
This is a full day job rather than a quick swap. The laterals sit under the entire sand bed, so the tank has to be emptied before the assembly can come out. Buy the sand at the same time, because old media that has been shovelled out and sat in a bucket is not worth returning to the filter.
