Product details

The Hayward SX220DA is the folding lateral assembly with center pipe for the Hayward ProSeries S220T, the 22 in. top mount sand filter. It is the genuine Hayward part.

What it does

The center pipe runs down the middle of the tank into the underdrain hub, and the laterals at its base collect filtered water while holding the sand back. When a lateral cracks or breaks, sand gets past it and shows up in the pool at the returns. Replacing the assembly puts the underdrain back in one piece.

Which filters

Hayward's ProSeries top mount manuals list SX220DA as the 22 in. folding lateral assembly, for the S220T and the S220T2. Each tank size takes its own assembly, so confirm the model on the filter label before ordering.

Refilling the filter

The sand has to come out to reach the laterals. With the new assembly in place, cap the center pipe with the sand shield, confirm every lateral is folded down, and fill the tank about halfway with water so the sand does not hit the laterals hard as it is poured. Keep the pipe centered, add 250 lb of 0.45 to 0.55 mm filter sand, and leave at least 10 in. between the sand and the top of the tank. Remove the sand shield, then refit the valve so the center pipe slips into the hole in the bottom of the valve.

Which filter does SX220DA fit?
Hayward's ProSeries top mount manuals list SX220DA as the folding lateral assembly for the 22 in. filter, the S220T, and the same 22 in. assembly for the S220T2. Check the model on your filter label before ordering.
How do I know the laterals are broken?
Sand coming back into the pool through the return jets is the usual sign. A cracked lateral lets filter sand slip past the underdrain and into the plumbing.
How much sand does the S220T take after the repair?
Hayward specifies 250 lb of filter sand graded 0.45 to 0.55 mm for the S220T. Keep the sand level at least 10 in. below the top of the tank.
How do I refill the tank without damaging the new laterals?
Cap the center pipe with the sand shield, make sure every lateral is folded down, and fill the tank about halfway with water to cushion the sand as it goes in. Keep the pipe centered in the opening while you pour.
