What the laterals do
The laterals sit at the bottom of the tank and are the only thing holding the sand back while letting filtered water into the center pipe and out to the pool. Their slots are cut narrower than a grain of sand. When a lateral cracks, and age, a hard freeze or running the filter dry will do it, sand goes straight into the return lines and ends up on the pool floor after every backwash.
Doing the job
Reaching the laterals means emptying the sand out of the tank, so plan on new media at the same time. Assemblies do not usually fail one lateral at a time either, so replacing the whole set with the center pipe is the repair that lasts rather than patching the one you can see.
