What it is
The membrane is the sealed panel you press to operate the power supply. It carries the printed markings and it transfers each press to the switch underneath while keeping water off the contacts. It sits outdoors, gets pressed with wet hands and is flexed every cycle, which is why it wears out well ahead of the electronics behind it.
