The Hayward SP11041 is a skim vac plate supplied with its elbow. It measures 6 inches in diameter and is molded in plastic.
How it is used
The plate drops into the skimmer and seats over the basket, closing off the skimmer throat. The vacuum hose connects to the elbow on top. From that point every bit of suction the pump makes goes down the hose to the vacuum head, and everything picked up off the floor is caught by the skimmer basket on its way past.
Why it beats vacuuming at the pump
The alternative is running the hose to the suction port and letting the debris travel to the pump strainer. That works, but emptying it means shutting down, opening the pot and priming again. With a skim vac you lift the basket, dump it, and carry on.
