Where it earns its place
Ball valves are how you make equipment serviceable. Put one on each side of a pump, a heater or a feeder and that piece can be opened, cleaned or swapped without draining the whole system or plugging lines in a hurry. A quarter turn takes the valve from fully open to fully closed, and there is nothing inside to slowly seize the way an old gate valve does.
The connections
The MIP end threads into a female fitting, and the socket end glues straight to 1-1/2 inch pipe. That combination suits tying into an existing threaded port on equipment while running solvent welded pipe on the other side.
Installing it
Wrap the male thread with sealant tape and tighten it by hand plus a modest turn with a strap. Plastic threads do not need the force metal pipe does, and the usual outcome of overtightening is a split in the fitting the valve is going into rather than a leak at the valve itself.
