What a close nipple is
It is threaded from one end to the other with no bare shank in the middle, which is the whole point. Two female fittings can be run onto it until they nearly meet, joining them with the least possible length between. That is what feeder plumbing needs where there is no room for a standard nipple.
When to change it
Feeder plumbing carries the most aggressive water anywhere on the equipment pad. Threads corrode, the wall thins from the inside, and eventually the nipple weeps where it enters the fitting. At that point tape and sealant only postpone the repair, and the nipple itself has to come out.
