The Pentair Rainbow R172435 is the 1 inch check ball for HC series automatic chlorine feeders, covering models HC-3315, HC-3330 and 3340.
What it does
The ball is the moving part of the feeder check. It lifts to let flow through and seats to stop it coming back. When it is worn, distorted or missing, the feeder can no longer hold that check and the system behaves oddly around the feeder line.
Worth doing while you are in there
This is a low cost part, so it is normally replaced any time the feeder is opened for service rather than inspected and put back.
