What the union is for
A feeder has to come out of the line from time to time, for service, for a rebuild, or to be replaced outright. A union is the fitting that makes that possible without a saw: undo the nut, lift the feeder out, and put it back on the same threads afterwards.
When to replace one
Unions are opened and closed more than any other fitting on a feeder, and each cycle wears the nut threads and the seal face. If the joint weeps after tightening, or the nut no longer pulls up cleanly, replacing the union is faster and more reliable than trying to seal a worn one.
