What it does
The check valve is built into an elbow, so it turns the line and controls the direction of flow in the same fitting. Flow goes one way and is blocked from coming back, which is what keeps feeder solution in the plumbing it belongs in.
When to replace it
Chemical feeders are a hard environment for small plastic parts. A check valve that is cracked, distorted or no longer seating should be changed, and since it is an inexpensive piece it is worth doing while the feeder is already open for other service.
