What it fixes

A check valve exists to let water go one way and stop it coming back. The flap is the moving piece that does the stopping, and it takes a hit every time the pump starts and stops. When it tears, stiffens or stops seating, water runs backward when the system shuts down and the pump can lose prime.

Repair over replacement

A flap kit lets the valve body stay glued in the plumbing. That turns what would be a cutting and repiping job into an internal parts change, which is why it is worth keeping the part number to hand.
