What it does
A diverter valve works by swinging a body across the ports inside the valve. The body is what moves, but the seal is what closes. It presses against the port face and blocks it. When that rubber hardens with age, flattens under its own load or tears, the diverter still swings but no longer shuts anything off, and water bypasses to the port that should be closed.
Service notes
The seal sits on the diverter under the valve cover, so it is renewed by opening the valve rather than by cutting anything out. If the diverter itself is scored or cracked, that is a separate part.
