Why the handle is what fails

A diverter valve handle sits in direct sun for years while taking the twisting force needed to move a diverter that has stiffened up. The plastic goes brittle, and eventually it cracks at the stem or rounds out so it spins without moving the valve. The valve body and the diverter underneath are usually in perfectly good condition.
