What goes wrong
A slide valve seals against o-rings that ride on the plunger shaft. As the rubber flattens and hardens, two things happen: water starts bypassing internally so the filter dribbles to waste even in the filter position, and the handle gets stiff and awkward to push and pull. Both point at the seals rather than the valve body.
