What a collar union does
The collar is the threaded ring that clamps the two halves of a union together over a seal. It is what lets a pump or a valve be taken out of the plumbing without cutting pipe, and it is usually the first thing to fail on an otherwise sound line, because it is exposed, it takes the tightening load and it sits in the sun.
