Product details

The Hayward HPX1985 is the contactor used in HeatPro heat pumps. It is the genuine Hayward replacement part.

What a contactor does

The contactor is the heavy duty switch inside the cabinet. The control side of the unit sends a low voltage signal to a coil, the coil pulls a set of contacts together, and full current reaches the compressor. Everything the heat pump does starts with that one set of contacts closing.

Why they fail

Contacts arc slightly every time they open and close. Over years of cycling the faces pit, carbon builds up, and the contactor either stops passing current cleanly or welds itself shut. The usual symptom is a unit that seems to be trying: the board calls for heat, something clicks, and the compressor never comes on. A meter across the contactor confirms it quickly.

Safety

Line voltage is present inside a heat pump cabinet whether or not the unit is running. Shut off power at the breaker before opening it, and if you are not comfortable working on live equipment, have the part fitted by a qualified technician.

What does the contactor do?
It is the switch that connects the high current supply to the compressor. The control board energizes a small coil, the coil pulls the contacts closed, and the unit runs.
My heat pump clicks but nothing starts. Is this the part?
It is the first thing to check. Burned or welded contacts are a common cause of a unit that signals correctly but never brings the compressor on. Have it tested before you buy.
