Product details

The Pentair 474327Z is the thermostatic expansion valve for the UltraTemp 140, 140C and 140HC pool heat pumps. It is the genuine Pentair part, and Pentair also lists it as 474327.

What the valve does

A heat pump moves heat out of the outside air and into the pool water. The expansion valve is the control point in that loop: it meters liquid refrigerant into the evaporator coil at the right rate for the conditions. Get that flow wrong and the whole cycle falls out of balance, which shows up as a unit that runs for hours with barely any temperature rise.

Before you order

The symptoms of a failed expansion valve overlap with a low refrigerant charge and with other sealed system faults, so have the unit diagnosed with gauges rather than replacing the valve on a guess.

Installation

This part sits inside the sealed refrigerant circuit. Fitting it means recovering the charge, opening the system and recharging it afterward, which is licensed technician work.
