Product details

The Pentair 473778 is the replacement contactor for the UltraTemp heat pump. It is listed for the 3-phase models and for all single phase models built after 2014.

What the contactor does

The contactor is the heavy duty switch between line power and the compressor. When the control board calls for heat, it energizes the contactor coil, the contacts close, and the compressor gets its power. Everything the heat pump does downstream of that call goes through this one component.

Why they fail

Contacts take an arc every time they open and close. Over years of cycling they pit and burn, and eventually either stop passing current or weld shut. A heat pump that hums at the panel but never brings the compressor up is the classic symptom, so the contactor is worth inspecting before the compressor gets blamed.

What does the contactor actually do?
It is the switch that connects line power to the compressor. The low voltage control energizes its coil, the contacts close, and the compressor runs.
My heat pump hums but the compressor never starts. Is this the part?
It is one of the first things to check. Pitted, burned or welded contacts are a common reason a compressor will not pick up, though the capacitor and the compressor itself should be checked too.
