The Pentair 473665 is the probe thermistor defrost sensor for pool and spa heat pumps. Pentair lists it for the ThermalFlo Titanium heat pump.

What a defrost sensor does

A heat pump pulls heat out of the outside air, and in cool weather that leaves the evaporator coil colder than the air around it. Moisture then freezes onto the coil and chokes off the airflow the unit depends on. The defrost thermistor is the probe that watches that coil temperature, and its reading is what the control uses to start and end a defrost cycle.

Why a bad probe matters

A thermistor that has drifted or failed does not stop the heat pump, it misleads it. The unit either defrosts on a mild day when there is nothing to melt, or ices up in the cold because the control never saw the temperature drop. Either way it heats badly and works harder than it should. Replacing the probe puts the control back on real numbers.
