Why a sensor causes big symptoms

A heat pump has no way to know what is happening beyond what its sensors tell the control board. When a sensor drifts or opens, the board keeps making decisions, just on wrong information. That is why a failing sensor rarely announces itself as a sensor problem. It looks like a unit that ices over, cycles on and off, or sits there refusing to heat a pool that is plainly cold.
