The Hayward HAXHXA1403 is the heat exchanger assembly for the H400 H-Series gas heater. It is supplied as a kit that contains the parts needed to complete the replacement, and it covers the millivolt, ED1 and ED2 versions of the heater.
The design
The exchanger uses the patented single header V baffle arrangement. That geometry moves heat into the water quickly and leaves virtually no condensation inside the cabinet, which is one of the things that shortens the life of a heater when it goes wrong. The tubing is protected with cupro nickel, the tougher of the materials Hayward specifies, for durability in harder or more aggressive water.
Before you order
Confirm the heater size on the data plate. This assembly is the H400 and does not cross to the smaller models in the range. The union nuts, header o-ring set and CPVC flange nipples around the exchanger are separate part numbers, and a heater old enough to need an exchanger is usually worth refreshing those at the same time.
