What the laterals do
The laterals sit at the bottom of the tank under the sand bed and collect filtered water while holding the sand back. When one cracks, sand starts coming back into the pool and flow through the bed goes uneven, so the filter stops doing its job even though everything else looks fine.
What is in the box
This is the complete lateral assembly, supplied as one piece rather than as individual arms. The plastic air tube, Hayward SX200Z1, is a separate part and is not included, so add it to the order if yours is damaged or missing.
