What the laterals do
The laterals sit at the bottom of the tank under the sand bed. They are slotted so water can pass through while the sand stays behind, and they feed everything back up the center pipe to the valve. That makes them the only thing standing between your sand and your pool.
When to replace them
Sand appearing in the pool, usually as a fine trail spreading out from the returns, is the classic sign that a lateral has cracked. Because the laterals all age at the same rate, replacing the assembly as a unit is more sensible than chasing one broken arm. Check the model of your filter against the fitment list before ordering.
