The Pentair 506161 is the vacuum plate assembly for the PacFab Bermuda skimmer. It is the piece that turns the skimmer into a vacuum port.
What it does
To vacuum a pool by hand you need the pump to pull through the hose and nothing else. The vacuum plate seats down in the skimmer and blocks the open path, so all the suction goes to the hose connection instead of splitting between the hose and the skimmer mouth. The difference at the vacuum head is obvious: with the plate in, the head grips the floor and picks up; without it, it wanders.
Where it sits
The plate goes into the skimmer above the basket, so debris pulled up the hose still collects in the basket where it is easy to empty rather than travelling on to the pump strainer.
