Why the weir matters

The weir is the hinged door that floats in the mouth of the skimmer. It sits just at the waterline and forces the incoming water to pass over a narrow lip, which speeds the surface flow up and pulls floating leaves, pollen and oils toward the skimmer instead of letting them drift past. It also acts as a one way gate: when the pump shuts off, the weir drops closed and keeps the contents of the basket from washing back into the pool.

When it needs replacing

Weirs crack, warp and lose buoyancy. If yours is stuck flat, floating too high to seal, chipped at the hinge or simply gone, the skimmer is doing far less than it should and debris will sit on the surface.
