Product details

The Hayward SP0410X602S is a 2 inch push pull slide valve kit. It is the genuine Hayward part, supplied as a kit.

How a slide valve works

Instead of rotating a dial through several positions, a slide valve moves a shaft in and out of the body. Down is filter and up is backwash. That is all a sand filter needs to run and to clean itself, and it is a simpler mechanism than a multiport with fewer sealing faces to leak past as the valve ages.

Operating it

Always stop the pump before moving the handle. Moving a valve under flow is how seals get torn and how a filter takes a pressure spike it was not built for. Pull up for backwash, run until the water in the sight glass runs clear, then shut down and push the handle back to filter.

When to replace

A slide valve that leaks sand back to the pool, weeps around the shaft, or will not hold a position has worn its internal seals. At that point the kit is the fix.

Is this a multiport valve?

No. It is a push pull slide valve. The handle slides in and out between filter and backwash instead of rotating through the positions of a multiport dial.

What size plumbing does it take?

2 inch.

What do I get in the kit?

It is sold as Hayward valve kit SP0410X602S. If you are replacing only part of the assembly, compare the kit against the parts list for your filter first.

How do I backwash with it?

Shut the pump off, pull the handle up to the backwash position, run the pump until the sight glass clears, shut down again and push the handle back down. Never move the handle with the pump running.
