Water leaving the impeller is moving fast and in every direction. The diffuser is the shaped housing that takes that flow and organizes it into the volute, converting speed into pressure. It is a quiet part that never moves, which is exactly why it gets overlooked when a pump starts to underperform.

Symptoms of a worn diffuser

A cracked diffuser, a broken hub or a sealing face that no longer meets the volute lets water loop back inside the pump instead of heading to the filter. The motor still runs at full speed and sounds normal, but flow at the returns falls off and the system takes longer to turn the pool over.
