Waterway 319-3230 is the factory strainer basket for the 6 inch pump trap, supplied with its molded handle. It is the same basket Waterway fits at the plant.
What the basket does
Every bit of leaf litter, hair and grit the basket holds is debris that never gets to the impeller or the shaft seal. That is the whole job. A basket that has split, cracked or lost its shape still looks like it is working, but it is passing material straight through to the wet end, so it is worth replacing at the first sign of damage rather than waiting for the pump to lose prime.
