Product details

The Hayward SMX11022320 is the compressor run capacitor for HeatPro heat pumps, rated 80 uF at 440 VAC. It is listed for the HP21104T and HP21104TC models.

What it does

A run capacitor stays in the circuit while the compressor is turning. It provides the phase shift the motor windings need to run efficiently. As the capacitor ages its capacitance falls, and the compressor starts drawing more current, running hotter and struggling to get going.

Symptoms and safety

Failed capacitors are one of the more common reasons a heat pump stops making heat. The compressor hums but will not start, or the unit trips its breaker shortly after calling for heat. A bulged or leaking case confirms it. Capacitors store energy after the power is switched off, so this is work for someone comfortable discharging one safely before the terminals are touched.
