Why the nest matters

A Perflex filter works by holding a coat of diatomaceous earth on a bundle of flexible tubes. The tubes are not the filter medium themselves; they are the frame the DE clings to. Once a tube splits, DE finds the shortcut and ends up back in the pool, and no amount of bumping or recharging will hold a coat again.
