What a spider gasket does

The spider gasket sits between the valve rotor and the valve body and seals off the ports that are supposed to be closed in each handle position. When it hardens, tears or takes a permanent set from heat, water bleeds past to a port it should not reach, and the symptom is usually water going somewhere unexpected rather than an obvious leak.
