The Pentair 271162Z is the stem O-ring for 2 in. top mount and side mount multiport valves. It seals around the stem, the shaft that the handle turns to select filter, backwash, rinse and the rest of the positions.
The leak it fixes
When a multiport starts weeping around the handle, the stem O-ring is the reason nearly every time. The O-ring hardens, flattens or gets scored by grit that has worked its way in, and water finds a path up the shaft. It is a small part failing in an obvious place, and replacing it is far quicker than chasing the valve body.
While the valve is apart
Getting to the stem means the handle assembly comes off, so it is worth having the valve spring, the spring washer and the handle washer on hand. They are sold separately and are the other pieces that wear in that stack. Note that the parts diagrams this O-ring appears in cover both 2 in. and 1-1/2 in. multiport valves, so confirm the valve size before ordering.
