Why o-rings fail
Valve o-rings live between two plastic surfaces under constant pressure. Over a few seasons they compress flat, harden, and stop springing back against the sealing face. The valve then weeps at the joint or lets water bypass internally. Replacing the ring is the cheapest repair on the pad, and it is worth putting a thin film of silicone o-ring lubricant on the new one so it seats without twisting or tearing.
