Product details

The Hayward HAXHXA1253 is the heat exchanger assembly for the H-Series 250,000 BTU pool heater, covering both the ED1 and ED2 styles. It is the genuine Hayward part.

What it does

The heat exchanger is where the heater actually does its work. Burner flame heats the exchanger, pool water is pushed through it by the pump, and the heat crosses from one to the other. Everything else in the cabinet exists to control and support that transfer.

Why they fail

Water chemistry. Low pH, high calcium and aggressive water all attack the exchanger from the inside, and undersized plumbing or poor flow lets the burner cook it from the outside. The result is a leak, usually visible as water dripping into the burner tray or pooling in the cabinet while the plumbing outside stays dry.

Before you fit a new one

Confirm the leak is the exchanger and not the header o-rings or the union connections, which can look similar. Then fix whatever caused the failure. A replacement exchanger in water that is still aggressive will not last any longer than the one it replaced.

My heater is leaking water inside, is this the part?
If water is dripping into the burner tray or running out of the cabinet with the plumbing dry, the exchanger is the usual cause. Have it confirmed before ordering, since header o-rings and the union connections can leak in a way that looks similar.
Can a leaking exchanger be repaired?
Not reliably. Once the tubes or the header have corroded through, the assembly is replaced. Sorting out the water chemistry that caused it matters just as much, or the new one goes the same way.
