What it does
The gasket sits between the lens and the light housing and is the only thing keeping pool water out of the fixture. It is a small part with a large job, and it is the part that fails quietly, because a fixture can take on water for a while before anyone notices the light has stopped working.
Fit a new one every time
Once a gasket has been squeezed down and heat cycled in service it takes a permanent set and will not seal properly a second time. Any time the light comes out of the niche and the lens comes off, put a fresh gasket in before it goes back together. Kill power at the breaker before pulling the fixture.
