Hayward O-Ring Shaft Seal Assembly

The Hayward SPX0735GA is the shaft seal o-ring assembly for Vari-Flo and Vari-Flo XL multiport valves. It seals the valve stem where the handle shaft passes through the key cover, and every valve uses two of them.

Which valves

It fits the Vari-Flo XL SP714T, the 1-1/2 in. top mount Vari-Flo valves SP710X, SP711, SP711-13, SP711-20 and SP712, and the 2 in. side mount SP715 and SP716. Hayward lists it for valves from 1976 to current, so it covers the valve on almost any Hayward sand filter still in service.

When to replace it

Water weeping around the handle while the pump runs is the classic symptom. The seals are also worth doing any time the key cover and handle assembly are off for other work, since they are already exposed. Order two, and put a light coat of o-ring lubricant on them before reassembly.
