The 17351-0101S is the mechanical shaft seal for Sta-Rite Dyna-Jet TPE Series pool and spa pumps. It is built from ceramic and rubber, the materials that hold up to pool chemistry, heat and constant rotation.
What the seal does
The shaft seal sits where the motor shaft passes through into the wet end. Two faces run against each other, one turning with the shaft and one fixed, and the film between them is what keeps water on the pump side. When that fails, water runs down the shaft into the motor, which is how a cheap seal turns into an expensive motor.
When to replace it
Water dripping between the motor and the seal plate, rust streaks down the motor housing, or moisture inside the end bell all point at the seal. Fit a new one any time the motor comes off, because the faces bed in on first run and a disturbed seal will not reseat.
