Product details

The Hayward SPX3200SA is the shaft seal assembly for TriStar pumps. It is the genuine Hayward part, listed for the TriStar SP3200 and SP3200EE and for NorthStar pumps built from 2008 to current.

What the shaft seal does

The seal rides on the motor shaft where it enters the wet end and keeps pool water on the pump side of the housing. It is a two piece mechanical seal, one half turning with the shaft and one half fixed in the housing, and both halves come in this assembly.

The symptom

Water dripping from between the motor and the strainer housing, sometimes only when the pump is running, sometimes only when it stops. That water is passing the shaft seal, and left alone it will run into the motor bearings and take the motor with it.

Doing the job

The seal sits behind the impeller, so the pump has to come apart to reach it. With it open, check the impeller and the housing o-ring, and lubricate rubber parts with an approved pool lubricant on reassembly.

Is it a complete seal or just one half?

It is the shaft seal assembly, so both mating halves are supplied together.

My pump drips between the motor and the strainer housing. Is this the part?

That is the classic failed shaft seal symptom. Water escaping at the back of the wet end runs down the motor face, and the seal is what stops it.

Do I need anything else to do the job?

Not necessarily, but the seal is reached with the impeller off, so inspect the impeller and the housing o-ring at the same time and use an approved lubricant on rubber parts during reassembly.
