Why a T-seal and not an o-ring
The seal has a flat T shaped section instead of a round cord. That profile locks into the groove in the union so it cannot roll or twist out of place while the union nut is being tightened, which is exactly the failure that leaves a pump dripping after a reassembly.
When to replace it
If a union weeps once the nut is hand tight and then wrench snugged, the seal has usually gone hard, taken a permanent flat, or split. Rubber in a pump union sees heat cycling every day the pump runs, so it is normal for it to age out well before the pump does. Fit fresh seals any time the plumbing comes apart for pump service and use a silicone lubricant on them.
