Product details

The Pentair Rainbow R172324NS is a 1/2 inch tube by tube check valve used on chlorinator plumbing to prevent backflow into equipment. It is listed for the Rainbow automatic chlorinator, model 300-29X.

Why it is there

A chemical feeder puts strong sanitizer solution into the return line. As long as water is moving forward that solution is diluted straight away and carried into the pool. When the pump stops and there is nothing holding the line, that concentrated solution can creep backwards toward the heater, the pump and the fittings. Metal parts do not survive that for long.

When to change it

Check valves in feeder lines are consumable. The seat is exposed to sanitizer around the clock and eventually it stops seating cleanly. If you find corrosion on equipment near the feeder, or you can see flow tracking the wrong way with the pump off, replace the valve before repairing anything downstream.
