The Pentair 51008400 is the five spoke spider gasket for Pentair American Products 1-1/2 inch side mount multiport valves, models 501501 and 501601. It measures 6 inches on the outside and 1 inch on the inside, and it is the pattern used on valves built after 1976.
Count the spokes before you order
American Products used more than one spider gasket pattern over the years, and they are not interchangeable. Take the old one out and count the spokes. Five spokes means this part. Check the outside diameter too, since 6 inches is what confirms it.
Why they fail
The spider gasket is what keeps each port of a multiport valve separate from its neighbors. As the rubber compresses and hardens, water starts crossing between ports inside the valve. The classic symptoms are a trickle out of the waste line while the valve is set to filter, or a backwash that never seems to finish clearing. Both are the gasket, not the filter.
Fitting
Clean the gasket channel in the valve body out completely before seating the new gasket, and press it in evenly all the way around. A silicone sealant or lubricant helps it bed in and stay put while the valve goes back together.
