Product details

The Pentair R38024 is the strainer basket for the PacFab Challenger pump, the same part carried under the number 355318. It sits in the strainer pot ahead of the impeller and catches everything the skimmer let past.

What a good basket buys you

Leaves, twigs and grit that reach the impeller wear it, block it or take out the shaft seal. The basket is the cheap barrier that stops that happening. It only works while its slots are open and its walls are sound, so a basket that has cracked, warped or lost a section is no longer doing the job even though it still fits.

Fitting and care

The basket drops into the pot without tools. Empty it before it packs solid, since a loaded basket starves the pump and shows up as poor flow and a noisy, cavitating impeller. Check the lid o-ring while the lid is off.

It is carried as Pentair R38024 and also as 355318. Both numbers point at the Challenger strainer basket.
Which pumps take it?
The PacFab Challenger pump group, including the hi head and high flow models.
Do I have to replace a cracked basket?
Yes. Debris passes straight through the split and can lodge in the impeller, which is a much bigger job than a basket.
Will a clean basket improve my flow?
A basket that is full or has collapsed slots restricts suction. Emptying it, or replacing a damaged one, restores the flow the pump was designed for.
