When to replace it
A booster volute housing is normally changed rather than repaired. A crack around a port, damage from water left in the pump over a freeze, or the erosion that follows running the pump dry all leave a housing that will not hold a seal no matter how many gaskets go into it.

The volute o-ring is a separate part. Replace it at the same time, because a new housing sealed against a compressed old ring will find a way to weep.
