Product details

The Hayward SPX1250XZ2C is the genuine pump motor shaft seal assembly for the model 5060 cleaner booster pump.

What the shaft seal does

Every wet end has one opening it cannot simply gasket shut: the hole the motor shaft turns through. The shaft seal closes that gap with two lapped faces, one riding on the shaft and one fixed in the housing, pressed together by a spring. It is the hardest working seal in the pump and the one that eventually wears.

Reading the leak

Water running out from between the wet end and the motor is a shaft seal. Water weeping from the seam where the two housing halves bolt together is the housing gasket. Getting that right before you order saves a second teardown, and left alone a failed shaft seal will put water into the motor bearings.

Fitting

Replace both halves of the seal as the assembly supplies them. A new rotating face run against an old seat will not last. While the pump is open, check the impeller and the housing o-ring, since the labor to reach them is already done.

What does a shaft seal do?

It seals the rotating motor shaft where it passes into the wet end of the pump, keeping pool water out of the motor. It is the one seal in the pump that has to work against a moving part.

Water is dripping between the pump and the motor. Is this the part?

Yes, that is the shaft seal. A leak from the seam between the two housings is usually the housing gasket instead, so note exactly where the water appears.

Do I get both halves of the seal?

Yes. SPX1250XZ2C is the seal assembly, and both faces must be replaced together. Reusing one half against a new one wears the new face out quickly.

Should I replace anything else at the same time?

Once the pump is open, look at the impeller and the housing o-ring. The labor is already spent, and a leaking seal has usually been letting water past for a while.
