Product details

The Hayward SPX4000SAV is a genuine shaft seal assembly built with Viton, supplied as a complete matched set. It is the seal that keeps pumped water on the wet side of the pump and off the motor.

Why Viton

The difference between this and a standard seal is the elastomer. Viton holds up better against heat and against aggressive water chemistry, which makes it the sensible choice on installations where standard seals have not been lasting, or where the pump sees conditions harder than a typical residential pool.

The failure to catch early

A shaft seal announces itself as water dripping from between the pump housing and the motor. It is tempting to ignore a slow drip, but that water runs along the shaft toward the motor bearings. What starts as an inexpensive seal ends as a motor, and quite quickly. Most seals fail because the pump ran dry at some point, since the seal faces rely on water for both lubrication and cooling.

Fitting it

A mechanical seal is a lapped pair and is replaced as a pair, which is how it is supplied. Keep the polished faces clean and do not touch them during assembly. A fingerprint or a grain of sand on a seal face is enough to make a brand new seal weep from the first day.

Which pumps does this seal fit?
The listing gives the part number rather than a fitment list. Check SPX4000SAV against the parts diagram for your pump, since seal assemblies look similar across models but are not interchangeable.
What is the difference between this and the standard seal?
The elastomer. This is the Viton version, which stands up better to heat and to aggressive water chemistry than the standard material. It is the choice where a standard seal has been failing early.
Can I replace just the half that is worn?
No. A mechanical seal is a matched pair, lapped together as a set. Fitting a new rotating face against an old stationary one will leak, so both halves are replaced together and are supplied that way.
Why did my seal fail?
Most often the pump was run dry, even briefly. Seals depend on water for lubrication and cooling, so losing prime or running a closed valve is enough to score the faces permanently.
