The Hayward SPX0704BA is the key cover gasket and handle assembly for the SP0704 1-1/2 in. Vari-Flo 4 position valve. It is the genuine Hayward kit, supplied with both parts together.
What the key gasket does
The diverter, the key, is what routes water to filter, backwash, waste or closed. The gasket on top of it is what keeps those paths separate. Once it hardens, flattens or tears, water crosses between ports: the filter never quite filters, backwash never quite backwashes, and the handle usually gets stiff or vague at the same time.
Check the valve before ordering
Hayward has built several valves that look alike from above. The one this kit fits has SP704-C molded into the bottom of the diverter. Lift the cover and read that marking rather than going by the shape of the handle.
What is not in the kit
The lid o-ring is a separate part. If the valve has been apart and the o-ring is flat, cracked or squashed out of round, replace it while the valve is open rather than a season later.
