What it does
The lock handle is what clamps the trap lid down onto its seal. It gets used every time the basket is emptied, which on a commercial trap can be daily, and it takes the full clamping load each time. Threads wear, the casting cracks, and eventually the handle turns without drawing the lid down.
Why it matters
A lid that is not clamped evenly leaks air rather than water, because the trap sits on the suction side. The pump loses prime, the basket fills with air, and flow drops off. Replacing the handle restores the clamp and, with it, the seal.
