What the trap body does
Everything the pump pulls off the pool passes through this housing first. It holds the strainer basket, keeps the pump primed between cycles, and seals against the volute so the pump can build suction. Because it is under constant vacuum and takes the weight of the plumbing, it is the part that cracks when a pump freezes, when a union is overtightened, or after enough seasons of sun on an aboveground installation.
Plan the whole job
A cracked pot rarely comes apart cleanly. The pot to volute gasket for the 5 inch trap, the trap cover o-ring and the basket are all separate parts, and it is worth having the gasket and o-ring on hand so the pump goes back together sealed the first time.
